The word novena comes from the Latin novem, meaning “nine” . Catholics use novenas as (a prayer) or prayers of petition and sometimes of thanksgiving. We say the prayer for nine days in a row. The Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent nine days in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. Thus, we have a precedent for the devotion we call a novena.

St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.
